15.12.2021 How To… Care For The Older Horse… In 10 Easy Steps

Introduction

“I think people understand things different when they get older. It’s not a question of getting soft, or seeing things in the grey areas instead of black and white. I really believe I’m just understanding things different. Better.” Jeff Lindsay

As your horse gets older, it’s inevitable that he will become stiffer, and I am often asked how best to help maintain an older horse’s comfort. I am priveleged to work with many older horses as part of their owners efforts to maintain their horse’s health and comfort. I was lucky enough to have horses as I was growing up, and several were with us until the end. These experiences and my ongoing learning, together with my training as an instructor, behaviourist and ACPAT and RAMP Registered Chartered Physiotherapist, help me to discuss the care of the older horse with the many clients who are in similar situations, and here I share with you some of my thoughts on this often emotional subject.

We all want to be confident that we are doing our best for our horse, but with the wealth of information available on the internet it can become confusing working out what’s relevant and what’s not. There are many ways to help keep the older horse comfortable, and I’d love to hear your thoughts and experiences. Knowledge is power, and I know you have valuable information to share with others.
