Fit For Welfare: An International Conference from The Society Of Master Saddlers

On 6th November 2021, I was delighted to be part of the innovative virtual event, ‘Fit For Welfare’, hosted by the Society of Master Saddlers (SMS). Today I’m sharing with you some of my learning from the day.

In a twist that I haven’t seen at other online conferences, the day began with an address from HRH The Princess Royal. To me, this was a reminder of just how important tack is in terms of the welfare of the horse.

Mental tools to assist with pre-riding anxiety, especially following injury

Emma Davies talked about overcoming anxiety in relation to horse riding. Anxiety is something I’m familiar with, and I’ve done a lot of reading around the subject. Emma shared 6 techniques to help improve your confidence and ease your anxiety. These were:

  1. Focus on execution
  2. Self talk
  3. Imagery
  4. Modify the situation
  5. Enhance confidence
  6. Planning

Take home message: You can use a variety of techniques to help ease your anxiety.
