Positive Posture: Part 1

I’m a great believer in ‘Your best posture is your next posture.’ Have you thought much about your horse’s posture, and how it might be affecting him? Or how you might help him improve his posture?

A colleague of mine, Dr Gillian Tabor, is running an online course in equine rehabilitation and posture. The course is designed for all horses, and all owners. You’ll learn which exercises to use, when to use them and how to progress to the next exercise. The objective of the programme is to positively influence your horse’s posture both statically and dynamically.

The course is suitable if you have a horse on box rest or undergoing rehabilitation from injuries or surgery. The exercises are focused on training the postural muscles that support the joints and the spine, which means they can be used combination with physiotherapy and body work, as well as electrotherapy. There are 28 lessons included, and the course costs just £49.

Training in a positive posture is essential for physical health and mental wellbeing of your horse. The course contains a range of exercises to support your horse’s training journey. Therefore, the exercises can be used to support a normal training programme, and equally would be useful for old horses and young horses that are not yet in ridden work.

Here’s some answers to frequently asked questions:

Do I need any special equipment?

No, you can do the exercises in a headcollar and lead rope. Whilst I recommend a cavesson (more information within the course) it is not essential

I don’t have an arena, can I still do the exercises?

Yes! You do not need an arena, an area of level ground will be ideal. However please make sure it is enclosed for you and your horse’s safety.

Is there a time limit on the course?

No, you can work through the programme at your own pace, in your own timeframe.
